What’s with the hit counter????

Spam, spam, spam, wonderful spam.

08/30-11 – Due to a security upgrade I had to turn off the hit counter which reset it to zero.  I’m not too bothered by this since even I find it hard to believe the old count of 35,000+ in little over a year!!!!!!

09/25/10 – It looks like the hit counter is working properly, the site got 6 hits in the past twelve hours, not exactly exciting, but about what I’d expect for such an obscure subject.  It appears that the spammers have turned their attention elsewhere for now, which is good since they managed to hit the site over 5,000 times (No, is not a typo or too many zeroes, we’re talking about over five thousand times) in the first four months.  Maybe they gave up (Hard to believe), maybe they grew up (“Now Tommy, it’s time to potty train!”), maybe they got arrested (“Freeze sucker!”), or maybe they simply decided that I’m just a wonderful guy (Hysterical laughter), but whatever the reason all’s quiet on the spam front for now.  Now all I have to do is get a lot of legitimate people to read the my blog.

09/24/10 – I’m feeling adventurous. so I’ve reinstalled the hit counter.  Now to see what happens.

08/24/10 – Well either this page is immensely popular and I got 184 hits in the past 24 hours, or the spammers are still trying to beat down the doors.  For some reason I suspect the latter, so I’ve removed the hit counter once again.

08/23/10 – I’ve reactivated the hit counter today to see if I’m still getting deluged with spam.  I haven’t seen any make it way thru my filters lately, but that doesn’t mean that it’s stopped.  My dream is to find a hit counter that only counts legitimate visitors, but I haven’t found it it yet.  No, actually my dream is that spammers come down with something really itchy and permanent that slowly drives them insane.  It would be appropriate.

07/10/10 – Spam, spam, spam, wonderful spam.  Or not so wonderful spam in this case.  I got hit over 400 times during the last weekend, and then another 700 times in the past few days, all of it aimed at the comments section. While none of it made it to the blog page (I vigorously moderate), the hit counter counted each and every one of them, giving the running totally a Never-Never Land quality. Since there seems to be no way to stop these pathetic attempts short of hiring ninja assassins (a concept that gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling) I’ve turned off the hit counter for now.
